HOUSTON, February 4, 2026 / TOKYO, February 5, 2026 – Lummus Technology and Sumitomo Chemical today announced the commercial availability of their highly-efficient Polymethyl Methacrylate Chemical Recycling (PMMA-CR) technology. This builds on the strategic partnership between Lummus and Sumitomo Chemical, first announced in May 2024, to co-develop and commercialize technologies that support circularity and carbon-neutral society across the petrochemical value chain.

“By uniting Lummus’ process expertise with Sumitomo Chemical’s materials innovation, we’re delivering a scalable, economically viable PMMA recycling solution,” said Leon de Bruyn, president and chief executive officer, Lummus Technology. “This gives our customers a clear pathway to reduce waste, lower emissions and unlock new value from recycled materials—turning sustainability into a competitive advantage.”

“We are proud to deliver this innovative PMMA-CR technology to market together with our trusted partner, Lummus Technology,” said Seiji Takeuchi, Senior Managing Executive Officer, Sumitomo Chemical. “Through commercial licensing, we will contribute to the realization of a circular economy by enabling the recycling of PMMA.”

Since establishing the partnership in 2024, Lummus and Sumitomo Chemical advanced development and commercialization of the PMMA-CR technology, including successful validation at Sumitomo Chemical’s pilot plant in Japan. The technology recycles end‑of‑life PMMA back into high‑purity methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer. Its depolymerization system, developed by The Japan Steel Works, Ltd. and Sumitomo Chemical, produces recycled MMA that matches the quality of fossil‑derived material. The process is also expected to cut life‑cycle greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 50%*, reducing plastic waste and reliance on fossil‑based feedstocks.

Key Technology Features
・Highly Efficient PMMA Recycling Process: Converts post-consumer and post-industrial PMMA waste into circular MMA monomer with high yield and high purity.
・Advanced Depolymerization System: Utilizes an efficient system featuring a twin-screw extruder and a heating system for uniform temperature and excellent thermal efficiency with further optimization specifically tailored for PMMA depolymerization.
・Continuous Operation: Self-cleaning extruder system ensures high equipment utilization and simple operability.
・Scalable and Modular: Capacity can be adjusted by duplicating trains; available as modular ISBL packages.
・Circular Integration: Produces recycled MMA monomer equivalent in quality to MMA monomer manufactured from fossil resources, enabling true closed-loop recycling for PMMA applications in automotive, electronics, construction, and more.

Accelerating the Demonstration Project for Its New Technology Contributing to the Petrochemical Industry’s Effort to Switch to Alternative Feedstocks

Sumitomo Chemical has constructed and begun operation of a pilot facility at the Sodegaura site of its Chiba Works for its new proprietary process to produce propylene directly from ethanol. This new technology is expected to significantly contribute to the petrochemical industry’s effort to switch to alternative feedstocks, and is supported by the NEDO* Green Innovation Fund. The Company will accelerate its demonstration project for this process, with the aim of commercializing this process and licensing the technology to other companies by the early 2030s.

Propylene is a widely used key chemical, and currently, in Japan, it is mainly produced from naphtha, a fossil resource. Ethanol, on the other hand, can be produced from biomass such as sugarcane, corn, and non-edible materials like pulp. In recent years, there has also been substantial progress in the development of technology to enable the large-scale production of ethanol from combustible waste, and its industrialization is in sight. As the shift toward sustainable essential chemical feedstocks advances, ethanol is increasingly expected to serve as an alternative feedstock that replaces fossil resource-derived chemicals.

Sumitomo Chemical’s newly developed process enables the direct production of propylene from ethanol. Unlike other propylene production processes using ethanol, this process allows for the one-step production of the final product propylene without passing through intermediates such as ethylene. Because of this distinguishing feature, the process is anticipated to reduce production costs. Moreover, it also generates hydrogen as a by-product. This is another advantage, because when bioethanol is used as a feedstock, it allows for the co-production of bio-derived hydrogen.

Going forward, Sumitomo Chemical will work to acquire the various data necessary for industrialization of this process, while also conducting extensive marketing activities for polypropylene produced from propylene obtained through this process. The Company aims to commercialize and license this technology by the early 2030s.

Sumitomo Chemical is significantly changing the direction of its petrochemical-related businesses, steering them toward value creation through technologies that reduce environmental impact. The Company is advancing structural reforms both in and outside of Japan, while at the same time, stepping up its technology licensing and catalyst sales, including for this process. Looking to the future, Sumitomo Chemical also aims to establish green transformation (GX) solutions business as a new business model it pursues beyond 2030, in which it will build a circular resource value chain involving raw material suppliers and product brand owners, as well as monetize the CO2 reduction achieved by customers.

The Sumitomo Chemical Group will continue to contribute to the achievement of a sustainable society through developing innovative technologies.

In 2021, Sumitomo Chemical formulated and announced a grand design to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, which lays out the Sumitomo Chemical Group’s policy and targets for GHG emissions reduction initiatives. It also set a reduction target to achieve by 2030 for Scope 3 (*1) indirect GHG emissions across the Company’s and major Group companies’ supply chains. As a result, Sumitomo Chemical once again received certification from the Science Based Targets (SBT)(*2) initiative that this new target meets the standard of “well-below 2°C.” (*3) In addition, it has also advanced climate change efforts through dialogue with its suppliers. For example, every year, Sumitomo Chemical provides presentations on the Group’s carbon neutrality initiatives to its major suppliers in Japan and requests their cooperation in reducing GHG emissions.

Sumitomo Chemical believes that these continued efforts have led to the recognition as a CDP Supplier Engagement Leader in the 2024 assessment. Encouraged by this credit, it will continue to strengthen collaborations with its suppliers to achieve carbon neutrality.

Sumitomo Chemical has successfully established mass production technology for liquid crystal polymer (LCP) using a monomer derived from biomass materials. As a global leader in the LCP market, the Company will accelerate the development of a mass production system for bio-based LCP leveraging this technology, aiming to obtain customer certification by the end of fiscal 2026 and to begin supplying the product from fiscal 2027.

LCP is a type of super engineering plastic that excels in heat resistance and fire resistance. It is used in a wide variety of applications, including materials for electric and electronic components in smartphones, automotive parts, and office automation equipment. Most of the raw materials used in such industrial applications are currently derived from fossil resources, and in recent years, there have been growing calls to switch all industrial product materials to biomass materials in an effort to achieve a sustainable society.

In the LCP manufacturing process using biomass materials that it has successfully developed, Sumitomo Chemical has adopted a segregation approach that completely separates biomass materials from other materials during production. This approach enables precise control of the biomass content and can clarify how much biomass materials are included in the product. In addition to the segregation approach, there is another approach called mass balance, in which when biomass materials and other materials are mixed to manufacture a product, the characteristics of the biomass materials is allocated to part of the output of the product based on the proportion of biomass materials used in the manufacturing process. Sumitomo Chemical plans to meet customer needs by considering the unique features of each of these approaches.

To achieve a sustainable society, technological innovations for the effective use of non-fossil resources and the reduction of GHG emissions are of utmost importance. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the industrial application of synthetic biology, driven by rapid technological advancements through the integration of biotechnology and digital technology. By combining the chemical technologies that it has cultivated for many years as a diversified chemical manufacturer with synthetic biology, Sumitomo Chemical aims to develop high-performance products that are difficult to produce through traditional chemical synthesis alone and to enhance energy efficiency in manufacturing processes.

Sumitomo Chemical will continue to strive to develop innovative technologies and open up new business areas to achieve a circular economy.

Sumitomo Chemical, aiming to create a society where humans live in harmony with nature, established the Sumitomo Chemical Biodiversity Guideline ("the Guideline") in 2011. Since then, the Company has proactively disclosed information about its initiatives and engaged in dialogue with stakeholders both inside and outside the Company. Sumitomo Chemical hereby announces that it has made revisions to the Guideline.

Biodiversity_Guideline.pdf

Key points of the revision

Beyond the conservation of biodiversity, Sumitomo Chemical will also work toward the conservation and restoration of natural capital*1.

These initiatives will be integrated with efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality and circular economy.

Sumitomo Chemical will promote these initiatives from the perspectives of both obligation*2 and contribution*3, and will continuously engage in societal contribution and awareness-raising activities.

One of Sumitomo Chemical’s management philosophies is to contribute to the development of human society through its business activities. Since the Company’s founding, it has carefully cultivated a culture of environmental conservation and has addressed biodiversity through the promotion of responsible care activities.

Following the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties in December 2022, the Japanese government declared its aim to achieve a nature-positive*4 economy through The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) of Japan 2023-2030 announced in March 2023. In addition, in March 2024, the Japanese government positioned the concept of nature conservation as a key issue in the value creation process of companies in the Transition Strategies toward a Nature Positive Economy. As a result, companies are increasingly required to contribute to these initiatives. In line with this trend, the Sumitomo Chemical Group has been expanding its initiatives, which has led to this revision.

The Sumitomo Chemical Group will continue to promote initiatives towards a nature-positive world. It aims to create a society where humans live in harmony with nature through the power of chemistry.

Sumitomo Chemical has released version 3.1 of its product carbon footprint calculation tool, CFP-TOMO®, that allows companies to easily and efficiently calculate the carbon footprint of their products. This tool is provided free of charge. In this latest version, CFP-TOMO® has shifted to a click-on agreement.

A click-on agreement, also known as a clickwrap or click-through agreement, is a type of contract in which users indicate their agreement to the terms of the contract by clicking an “agree” button or following a similar process. Now that this type of contract has been adopted, it has become easier to start using CFP-TOMO®.

1. Shifting to a Click-On Agreement
Previously, a new user needed to sign a license agreement with Sumitomo Chemical to use CFP-TOMO®. However, for version 3.1 of the tool, this will no longer be necessary. A new user is requested to carefully review and understand the contract terms before starting to use the tool.

2. For Existing Contract Holders
Currently, over 110 companies, mainly in the chemical industry, have entered into the contract to use CFP-TOMO®. Sumitomo Chemical will contact existing contract holders individually to request that they update CFP-TOMO® to version 3.1. Even if contract holders do not update their contract, they will still be able to continue to use version 3.0.

Sumitomo Chemical will continue to advance collaborations with suppliers, business partners and other stakeholders to achieve carbon neutrality across society as a whole.

Sumitomo Chemical has newly designated 10 of the Group’s products and technologies as Sumika Sustainable Solutions. This is one of the Company’s initiatives aimed at achieving a sustainable society, which marks its nineth anniversary this year. Sumika Sustainable Solutions, now including a total of 81 products and technologies, represent annual sales revenue of 588.7 billion yen, accounting for 24% of the Group’s total sales revenue.

Since 2016, Sumitomo Chemical has been working on this initiative through which it designates the Group’s products and technologies that contribute to addressing climate change and reducing environmental impact as Sumika Sustainable Solutions. The designation process includes reviews and assessments by multiple external experts. The Company has set the target of increasing the annual sales revenue from Sumika Sustainable Solutions to 700 billion yen in FY2024, the final year of its current Corporate Business Plan, and to 1.2 trillion yen by FY2030.

The newly designated products include a termite control agent using plant-derived natural pyrethrin, super engineering plastics with outstanding heat resistance, and polypropylene manufactured using material recycling technology (see the attached document for more details). Each of the products and technologies are aligned with specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and are expected to contribute to meeting those goals in their respective fields.

In 2023, Sumitomo Chemical introduced a new indicator of avoided greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions called Science Based Contributions (SBC) to more clearly demonstrate the contribution of the Company’s products and technologies to carbon neutrality. With the SBC indicator, the Company quantifies and visualizes, through scientific calculations, how much GHG emissions have been reduced in society through the use of selected Sumika Sustainable Solutions technologies and final products that are expected to definitively reduce GHG emissions. The SBC for FY2023 was 7.10 million tons of CO2e, which is a carbon dioxide equivalent unit. The Company will utilize the SBC as one of its major indicators for promoting proactive information disclosure to its stakeholders and advance its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality globally.

The Sumitomo Chemical Group strives to be an innovative solution provider that solves society’s major issues by leveraging innovative technologies. The Group will continue to work as one to create solutions that contribute to building a sustainable society.

Sumitomo Chemical held a construction completion ceremony at its new research facility Innovation Center MEGURU (“MEGURU”) at its Chiba site located in Sodegaura City, Chiba, Japan, on June 26, 2024. Operations at MEGURU then began the same day. This research facility has been opened to consolidate and strengthen the Company’s research groups developing technologies for reducing environmental impact at its Chiba site. The Company will further accelerate the development of technologies and materials that contribute to environmental impact reduction and seek to create new value through these solutions.

As the global movement towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 gains momentum, the Sumitomo Chemical Group is making a major pivot in its petrochemicals business, directing its resources to value creation through environmental impact reduction technology. Research and development at the Chiba site is at the core of this effort, and its transformation is the objective behind its opening of MEGURU and the consolidation of the research groups.

The Chiba site has been the research and manufacturing center of Sumitomo Chemical’s petrochemicals business. It has offered polymer design, catalyst, process, compound and processing technologies while also providing pilot facilities to scale new technologies for commercialization. Building on the technological resources and infrastructure at the site, Sumitomo Chemical will strive to create innovative technologies at MEGURU that help lessen environmental impact, including chemical recycling and material recycling technologies, and to establish them not only in Japan, but also globally.

Sumitomo Chemical will also transfer and consolidate the personnel for polymer research, super engineering plastics, functional chemicals and other products located in the Tsukuba and Osaka sites to MEGURU in the Chiba site, the hub of the Company’s polymer materials research and development. Through this reorganization, the Company will establish a system that can further strengthen internal and external collaboration, and thereby speed up the development of innovative new materials, such as those for next-generation mobility applications and high-speed mobile communication systems.

The name of the new research facility “MEGURU,” which means “circulate” in Japanese, represents Sumitomo Chemical’s reaffirmation of its founding spirit of resolving society’s major issues through business, a return to basics, as well as determination to advance next-generation technology innovation to contribute to a circular economy. Based on this commitment, the Company designed the space in MEGURU so as to promote interaction among researchers while also utilizing an environmentally-friendly design for the new facility, which has been ranked highest in the Building-Housing Energy-efficiency Labeling System and certified as ZEB Ready*.

The Sumitomo Chemical Group will create new value by making the most use of the resources that it has cultivated related to environmental impact reduction technology, and accelerate transformation of its business portfolio to one focused on solution-providing businesses.

Sumitomo Chemical has registered as a TNFD Adopter*1 and endorsed the TNFD Recommendations, which were published in September 2023 by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). The Company will be announced as one of the TNFD Early Adopters at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting held at Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, in January 2024.

The TNFD is an international initiative launched in June 2021. It aims to shift financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-positive outcomes*2 by encouraging companies and financial institutions to disclose information about their nature-related issues.

Sumitomo Chemical recognizes the sustainable use of natural capital, which contributes to ecosystem conservation, as one of its material issues that should be addressed as a management priority. As such, in December 2011, the Company established Sumitomo Chemical's Commitment to the Conservation of Biodiversity, and has since been operating its business under this commitment. Furthermore, in order to enhance the Company's disclosure of nature-related information, Sumitomo Chemical has engaged in the TNFD Forum, which advocates for the goals and vision of the TNFD and supports its activities, since March 2022.

The Sumitomo Chemical Group will continue to work together to contribute to achieving a sustainable society through enhancing its disclosures based on the TNFD Recommendations, as well as creating solutions that contribute to ecosystem conservation.
